2011 Band Field Show

Composer and author Joseph Curiale has been described as “the poster boy for dreams come true.” Arriving in Los Angeles in 1980 with nothing more than a passion for music and an unshakable belief in himself, he was writing music for The Tonight Show by 1982 and soon after became the first staff songwriter in the history of Columbia Pictures. He has composed and orchestrated music for movies, TV, and live performances, including Steve Martin’s Roxanne. His work on the soundtrack for the movie Breakin’ sold over 4 million copies, while his orchestrations for A Tribute To Sammy Davis Jr. earned him an Emmy nomination. His original CDs, Awakening and The Music Of Life, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, are featured regularly on National Public Radio. Mr. Curiale is also an author, poet, photographer and artist. A deeply spiritual man, his works are recognized the world-over for their passion, beauty and sense of wonder.

Awakening is a cathartic work, a reflection on the composer’s recovery from a near-death experience. This CD is a celebration of the composer surviving serious illness in the California countryside. His work is filled with tender, intimate moments ... infused with wonder, radiance and joy, that is soul inspired. Cast in three movements, the first two, Compassion and Forgiveness are serene and tranquil. Joy bursts forth with energy and excitement, hailing the dawn of a new day with its dance-like infectious rhythms.
Adelina de Maya is a deeply personal work, written in tribute to the composer’s sister. The influence of Latin American music is quite evident, and the composer uses the rhythms and melodic contours of Latin music to depict his sister’s love for the region and its music.

River of Tears and Call of the Mountain are two movements from a larger work entitled
Gates of Gold, a musical depiction of the hopes and fears of Chinese immigrants during the gold rush of the 1890s. Lush in orchestration and lyrical, Curiale combines traditional American sounds à la Aaron Copland with eastern melodic devices and traditional Chinese instruments. From these strands he weaves a beautiful emotional tapestry, artfully representing the excitement of discovering a new land, and nostalgia for a forsaken home.
